The executive who cannot stop thinking is not disciplined. They are depleted. When the spleen is functioning optimally, digestion is efficient, energy is stable, and the mind is clear and focused. When the spleen is weakened or deficient, the transformation function fails, dampness accumulates in the system, and the clear Qi cannot rise adequately to support brain function (Maciocia, G., The Foundations of Chinese Medicine, 3rd ed., 2015).

The emotion most directly associated with the Earth element in TCM theory is si, often translated as “pensiveness” or “excessive thinking.” In TCM clinical observation, the relationship between excessive mental rumination and spleen weakness is direct and bidirectional: overthinking weakens the spleen, and spleen deficiency produces a tendency toward excessive mental activity that is difficult to resolve through willpower alone. The person whose spleen Qi is depleted experiences their mind as “sticky” — returning repeatedly to the same problems without resolution, unable to fully let go of worries even when the rational analysis has already been completed.

For the executive whose work involves continuous high-volume cognitive processing, the risk of spleen depletion is significant. The signs of deficiency — mental fog, difficulty concentrating, circular thinking, and a particular quality of low-grade worry that does not respond to logical reassurance — are often attributed to stress or inadequate sleep rather than to the physiological root that TCM identifies.

The Gut-Brain Axis: What Neuroscience Confirms About Spleen Meridian Function

The TCM account of the spleen’s role in cognition is not without parallel in contemporary research. The TCM practitioner and the neuroscientist are describing different aspects of the same system using different vocabularies. The clinical picture they describe is the same.

How TCM Spleen Depletion Presents in Executive Performance

The signature presentation of spleen meridian depletion in executives is not generalised fatigue or low energy. It is a specific cognitive pattern: the inability to close a thinking loop. The executive can open every analysis. They can identify every relevant consideration. What they cannot do is reach a resolution that holds — a decision or perspective that the mind accepts as complete and moves on from.

This produces the characteristic 2am problem: not an inability to sleep, but the experience of waking already engaged with a problem that has not been metabolised. In TCM terms, the spleen has not completed the digestion of the mental content. The “dampness” that results is not metaphorical — it is a specific physiological condition of incomplete metabolic processing that manifests cognitively as rumination and physically as the heaviness, brain fog, and difficulty with sustained concentration that executives often attribute to “too much on my plate.”

The distinction matters enormously for executive cognitive performance because the intervention is entirely different. If the problem is too much on the plate, the solution is removal — delegation, prioritisation, scope reduction. If the problem is insufficient digestive capacity to process what is already there, removal of content does not address the root. The executive reduces their commitments, finds the same cognitive pattern reasserting itself at the new lower load, and concludes (incorrectly) that even the reduced load is too much. The spleen meridian is the system that needs restoring, not the schedule that needs emptying.

TCM practitioners identify spleen depletion through characteristic pulse presentations in the spleen position (right middle position), a tendency toward loose or irregular digestion under stress, a quality of heaviness or mild oedema particularly in the lower limbs, and a specific presentation of what TCM calls “dampness” — a foggy, slow, unfocused quality of thinking that persists regardless of sleep adequacy. The Relationship Between Spleen Meridian Health and Decision Quality

Decision quality in executives is not solely a function of information quality or analytical capability. It is also a function of the cognitive state in which decisions are made — and spleen meridian health is a primary determinant of that state.

The executive with a well-functioning spleen meridian makes decisions from a state of mental clarity: they can hold the relevant considerations in mind simultaneously, weigh them without excessive attachment to any single factor, arrive at a conclusion that feels settled, and move on without second-guessing the resolution. The decision is digested as thoroughly as a meal — absorbed, processed, and released.
